A Message to the Community
On Monday, our world was shattered by the shocking attack at the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park. Stories – of families running for their lives, of children hidden in trash cans, of a young man who fell out of his wheelchair while trying to escape the gunfire – bring the horrors of the day home with terrifying vividness. Our hearts ache for the families of the victims and we pray for a complete, speedy recovery for all who were injured physically and emotionally. We are deeply saddened to join the growing list of communities affected by gun violence.
This is a dark time in our community, and it feels as if things are spinning out of control; yet, it is precisely at times like these that need each other the most. As the Jewish sage Rabbi Hillel stated, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”
We are all seeking ways to support each other and, especially, those who have been most directly affected. People are donating blood, money, expertise, and time to save lives and support survivors. Others are sharing resources – such as those attached here, here, and here – which are intended to help children cope.
At times like this, it helps to know that we are part of a community. We are stronger together, and we are here for you.
Wishing us all safety and peace,
Shana
