Appreciating Our Fine Feathered Friends
New experiences are the spice of life, and they help us all enjoy life and develop new skills and awareness! Many of Libenu’s residents, along with several staff members, recently went bird-watching for the first time in their lives. North Park Nature Preserve proved to be the perfect setting, with its bountiful trees, open spaces, and picnic tables for an outdoor lunch that was packed for the occasion. Lisette Zaid, Libenu’s Director of Advancement and a Chicago Audubon Society board member, initiated and led the bird walk, which she designed to be completely accessible and inclusive for participation by foot or wheelchair.
The Chicago Audubon Society lent Libenu binoculars so that each resident had the opportunity to learn how to use them. Lisette took the participants around the nature preserve and helped them identify various varieties of birds by sight and sound, using a checklist specially created for the outing. Highlights included a northern flicker, a family of red-winged blackbirds, a robin in a nest, and a gaggle of goslings with their parents.
Libenu is planning forward another bird walk during the fall migration season to see even more beautiful birds and nature in our community. Would you like to join us? Email us at [email protected] so we can let you know when and where we’re going to meet.
We look forward to seeing you there!
